Eddie Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 My 96 2.0L petrol has 90K miles. Recently at start up I hear a low screeching, which I believe is a valve sticking. I had the same sound coming from a Primera previously and sticking valves was the problem. As an oil and filter change is due should I add Slick 50 or similar when I change the oil, should an additive fix my problem? The noise only happens at cold start and lasts for about a minute of driving, also it stops with increased revs. Will it get worse if it is not resolved?Regards Eddie. Quote
HJT Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 Sounds like a belt slipping somewhere. Check the belt tensions and or renew any suspect ones. Howard Quote
Topbloke Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 this sounds like a possible belt tensioner problem usually a precursur to the tensioner or idler failing, if you are handy with spanner let the tension of the belt and rotate the rollers/pullys best when cold as thats when the noise starts don't forget to draw the belt run before you take the belt off. the rollers/tensioner should rotate with no roughness or noise Quote
seatkid Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 The only thing slick about slick50 is the crap they says it can do. Believe me, at best Slick50 does nothing, at worst it buggers up the lubrication system (no such thing as PTFE that can stay in suspension). Been there, done the damage... Quote

Guest yurir Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Hi Eddie, Had this same symptom.Garage checked the tensioner and its idler pulle, but couldn't find anything wrong. After a while it became worse; would screech constantly on idle. After advice on this forum, instructed garage to replace tensioner. Problem cured. Best wishes,Yuri. Quote
Guest wolfman62 Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 I had the same, tensioner gave up and threw belt off. New tensioner and belt still noise but it was due this time to a cheap replacement belt. New better qquality belt fitted and now sorted. Quote
